Calpe is characterised by the 332 metre high rock, El Peñon de Ifach, which juts out into the sea and can be seen from miles away. The rock is part of a small bird sanctuary. Calpe is a tourist resort because of its relatively good climate. There are several apartment buildings on the promenade, as well as cafes, restaurants and discos. The surrounding hills are full of villas. Calpe has two large beaches, to the left and right of the Ifach. The old beach, El Arenal, is situated between the town and the Ifach. The new beach, La Fossa, is the part to the north of the Ifach. Both have a promenade along the whole length of the beach. The old centre is still intact and contains traces of Moorish rule.
