Behind the wall: an eighteenth-century villa with frescoes and a tower

You push open the wrought-iron gate and the village falls away behind you. What remains is a courtyard: the villa on one side, on the other a brick portico of four arches, double height, cool through July. Painted quotations run along its back wall. Two spaces in a private garage, and some 220 m² of outbuildings that include a second, self-contained dwelling — a guest house, or income.

The house needs conservative restoration and complete new services. That is not a footnote; it is the brief. But the shell is sound, the frescoes are there, the floors are still down. This is not a rescue. It is a finishing. And the practicalities. Alessandria is ten kilometres away, Casale Monferrato a little further. Turin, Milan and the Ligurian coast are each a little over an hour by car — as are the Barolo and Barbaresco hills. From the UK, low-cost flights run to Turin, Milan and Genoa from London, Manchester, Bristol and Edinburgh; the drive from Turin airport is about an hour, from Genoa slightly less. Close enough for a long weekend, far enough that nobody drops in.
